Security / Telecommunications Technician

Job Purpose

This is an excellent opportunity for a low voltage systems integrator with access control and video surveillance experience in installing, testing and programming security systems. Strong IT/networking skills are a plus. Based out of Topeka, KS – the successful candidate will work under the supervision of the installation manger and our project manager as it relates to the day-to-day operations as a field technician. The function of this position is the installation of new security systems while maintaining a current knowledge base of industry standards and security products and the necessary skills to install, terminate, program and trouble shoot moderate to advanced installations. A successful candidate for this position must be able to demonstrate the abilities to be reliable, accurately complete paperwork such as time sheets, system documentation; as-build’s and possesses a working knowledge of the products actively installed in the Access Control/Video Surveillance Industry.

Description of Duties and Tasks

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Required

  • Performs service/installation of access control, closed circuit television systems, and other various related systems.
  • Evaluates, diagnoses, troubleshoots systems and perform repairs as necessary.
  • Performs installs, upgrades, and additions to systems in order to increase functionality and usability.
  • Performs computer program entry as required to add Video Surveillance cameras, access control device, and other low voltage systems as needed.
  • Informs personnel regarding procedures and/or status of work orders for the purpose of providing necessary information for making decisions, taking appropriate action and/or complying with health and safety regulations.
  • Prepares documentation in a variety of written and electronic formats. (e.g. daily paperwork/log, time and materials, etc.)
  • Evaluates, diagnoses, troubleshoots systems and perform repairs as necessary.
  • Requests equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required items.
  • Transports a variety of items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.
  • Write clearly and informatively, able to read and interpret written information.
  • Speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations, listen and get clarification.
  • Professionalism approach others in a tactful manner, react well under pressure, treat others with respect and consideration regardless of their status or position, accept responsibility for own actions, follow through on commitments.
  • Demonstrated ability to program, install, troubleshoot, and explain commercial security systems as required.
  • Must be able to train customers on the usage of all applicable products used in installation and/or system upgrades.
  • Ensure compliance with all State and Federal regulations as applicable to service, installation, maintenance of security systems and OSHA safety standards.
  • Must be available to travel as necessary.

Knowledge Must possess required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

Required

  • Ability to select the proper type of cable and perform installation in plenum or non-plenum rated environments.
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal codes as they apply to security and life safety equipment.
  • Intermediate knowledge of computer, networks, and information technology related systems.
  • Intermediate knowledge of structured cabling.
  • Should have EIA/TIA wiring knowledge.

Physical Requirements Required

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • The employee is frequently required to walk.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must be able to safely move and lift materials and equipment weighing up to 25 lbs. on a routine basis, and on limited occasions up to 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision, distant vision, and peripheral vision.
  • The employee must be capable of frequently bending, kneeling, crawling and stooping while working.
  • The employee will consistently be required to work from high places such as roofs, ceilings, ladders, as well as from crawl spaces and other limited spaces within and outside of residences and commercial businesses.
  • Work is performed within extreme temperature ranges.
  • Ability to safely use hand and power tools.

Work Experience Required

  • Two (2) years installing, servicing, and maintaining access control and Video Surveillance systems.

Preferred

  • Five (5) or more years installing, servicing, and maintaining access control and Video Surveillance systems.

Education Required

  • High School diploma or educational equivalent.
  • Preferred
  • AA degree, or some college courses in related area.

Licenses/Certifications Required

  • Valid Kansas Driver’s license — Clean Driving Record

Safety Required

  • Work safely and follow safety rules. Report unsafe working conditions and behavior. Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.
